Morion Cabasset 1580
Almond shaped skull with narrow brim at the sides extending to points front and back. Tall form, rising to a broad stalk. Creased front and rear and at each side. Brim with an internally rolled and roped edge with a narrow recessed parallel border. The edge of the skull retaining a line of 14 lining rivets. Lightly cleaned - showing remains of oxide near the rivets. Small internal riveted patch at the left rear of the skull. Minor delaminations on the exterior surface, one facet of the interior and esp. at the edge of the metal in the roll. The skull has a nice full, rounded form. The brim is intentionally assymmetric front to back. The front is a little longer and extends straight from the skull. The back is swept up slightly. This would allow the back to fit better to the neck as the wearer bends his head back. Similar to item number A-323 - that one has a smaller stalk, rosettes, plume holder and a narrower skull form. These are often described as Spanish Morions. The seller indicated that the decorative washers and plume holder have been lost. There are two empty holes above the row of lining rivets at the back of the helmet. Decorative washers may be lost, but it is also possible that they were not present originally. There are two filled holes - one in each side of the brim. These are often described as having been used to hang the helmet for display or storage. These are very well filled, indicating that they were likely filled early in the life of the helmet. The interior has a very nice even russet finish.
Measurements: Weight 2 pounds 11.6 ounces (1240g). Thickness: highly variable but generally app. 0.075 in. near the peak, 0.060 in. at the bulge and 0.040 in. above the lining rivets.
