University of North Carolina graduate study session Feb. 2025
Items chosen for inclusion in the presentation for UNC graduate students in association with Prof. Wayne Lee's study of military history. Items were chosen to include examples of different pieces, styles, and decorative elements. These include:
- A close helmet typical in form in Italian armours.
- two helmets that show different styles of helmet with similar decorative styles.
- a helmet with likely signs of original finish and possible weapon damage.
- four breastplates which illustrate different forms, different quality of construction and different protective goals.
- two different arms which demonstrate how armour is made to bend and fit.
- different styles of gauntlets, one mitten, one partial mitten and a fingered gauntlet.
- two separate elbows illustrating alternate ways of constructing a joint, and additional decorative details.
- three very different pieces of mail which show how it was constructed. Large, small and a sleeve with tailoring.
- A pauldron and another pauldron plate
- Some tasset terminal plates which illustrate different styles of decoration
- A crossbow and cranequin
- three cases of smaller items including arrow/crossbow heads, a bolt, buckles, strap mounts, strap ends, spur mounts, spur parts, brigandine plates, etc.
- Samples of the same steel with different work and heat treat
Discussion of these items will include descriptions of construction, fashion, and military technology that influence the form of the pieces and the composition and distribution of material in the pieces.
