In the field of European armour the best, first book to read is Claude Blair's "European Armour" It provides the basic knowledge necessary to understand other sources.

Knyght Errant's books page provides a nice list of a set of generally valuable books with descriptions.

At the time of publication in 1920 this was the definitive work on European armor. It still represents a good source for a basic introduction to the top with a large number of illustrations of items that are more commonly found in specific institution catalogs, and others that are not commonly seen.

Then there are chapters on guns, production of iron, steel and armour and then discussion of protection provided by armor. 951 pages. Illustrations show pieces of armour and magnified images of the structure of the iron/steel. Generally includes a characterization of the type of steel and indication of the methods used to produce that structure. Anyone with any interest in the metallurgy of armor should read this book.
